The Chairman of the National Peace Council Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante has stated that the Council would be very proactive to avert any chaos in the round up to the 2012 general elections. According him, the Council would raise awareness on the use of non-violent strategies in response to conflict through networking, coordination and nationwide campaign. Most Rev. Asante Antwi’s comment corroborates the call by President Mills for all well-meaning Ghanaians to foster peace ahead of next year’s elections. President Mills while inaugurating the National Peace Council in Accra urged the members of the Council to defy all odds and ensure peace in the country. "It does not matter who is involved. Whether it is the president who is an obstacle to peace, whether it is the government which is an obstacle to peace, whether it is traditional leaders who are obstacles to peace, whether it is political leaders who are obstacles to peace, [the Council] has the legal right to bring all of us to order", he noted, adding that Ghana is more important than any individual or group of people. In an interview with Ekosii Sen sit-in host Kojo Asare Baffour Acheampong Thursday, Most Rev. Asante stated that the Peace Council would not be like the fire service, that is largely reactive, but would be proactive and work assiduously to prevent any uncertainty in 2012. He said even though there has been a lot of talk about peace in the country and the need to maintain that peace, it is about time Ghanaians started acting peace, instead of just talking peace. Most Rev. Asante observed that given the way the two leading contending parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party have positioned themselves, the likelihood of a conflict situation in 2012 cannot be ruled out. He noted the passing into law of the National Peace Council Act 2011 has now given the Council a legal backing to work effectively. The Peace Council Chairman regretted the conduct of some journalists, politicians and serial callers who have resorted to inflame passions just for their parochial interest. He cautioned the media to be wary of manipulation from politicians, who invariably are the source of events leading to conflict situations in the country and also be circumspect in their reportage to promote peace and deepen democratic values in the country. Most Rev. Asante pledged their commitment for peace to prevail, before, during and after the 2012 elections.
