Supreme Court nominee, Kweku T. Ackaah-Boafo has stressed the importance of promoting responsibility among social media users as a key solution to curbing online abuse, warning that the law can catch up with offenders.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, 20 June, Mr Ackaah-Boafo acknowledged the growing concern over the misuse of social media despite its role as a powerful tool for communication and expression.
He cautioned against over-dependence on litigation as a blanket solution to offensive online behaviour, suggesting instead that fostering a culture of accountability would be more effective in the long term.
"If you go on social media and you use that to abuse somebody and the person thinks that he is defamed, I think that going to the court will not be gagging anybody. People must be responsible on social media," he stated.
His comments were in response to a question regarding the increasing calls for legal action against abuse and defamation on digital platforms.
