The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is dismissing news reports that it wants to impose incumbent Members of Parliament on constituencies.
The party says contrary to claims within some sections within the party, the National Executives of the Party are not trying to "extend their mandate" as a congress to elect new national executives looms.
This comes after a growing media war led by former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng and others in the party who are against proposals for the Party to hold early congress, to choose a presidential candidate before electing national officers.
Asamoah Boateng thinks the suggestion would be a wrong approach to dealing with seeming factionalism in the party.
He has accused national party executives of what he calls a "grand scheme" to seek re-election because they feel threatened.
In a press statement released after a crucial National Executive Committee meeting, the party describes such reports a misinformation.
The statement is as follows
The National Executive Committee New Patriotic Party met today, 3rd October 2013, to deliberate on the Steering Committee Proposals on the way forward for the Party.
Two areas of misinformation were dismissed, namely that there was any a plan to impose M.P.s on Constituencies. There is no such plan. The New Patriotic Party continues to believe that elections are the best way to judge one’s electability.
The second misinformation was that the National Executives are seeking to extend their mandate. This too was summarily dismissed. The National Executives are working towards its replacement in March 2014 and the Constituency and Regional elections to precede the National Delegates Congress.
Members of the National Executive Committee have been tasked to consult their constituencies for finalization at a meeting next week of the proposal and internal calendar for submission to the National Council.
