The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the government’s intention to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, commonly known as Ridge Hospital, into a Teaching Hospital.
According to him, this initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance Ghana’s healthcare system and expand medical training opportunities.
Speaking on JoyNews TV, Mr Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing at least one regional hospital in all sixteen regions.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of refurbishing existing healthcare facilities to ensure their continued efficiency and effectiveness in delivering quality medical services.
“We are also looking at upgrading some of the already existing health facilities,” he stated. “You don’t build new ones and leave already existing ones to deteriorate. So we are looking at improving Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and upgrading Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.”
Regarding the planned transformation of Ridge Hospital, the Minister explained, “We are considering upgrading the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a Teaching Hospital. We are also exploring ways to increase the number of CHPS compounds in the country and integrate healthcare facilities to enhance efficiency.”
The proposed upgrade of Ridge Hospital is expected to bolster medical education, improve healthcare delivery, and strengthen Ghana’s overall medical infrastructure, ensuring better access to quality healthcare for citizens.
