The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan is furious at media reports that the party plans to partner the ruling New Patriotic Party in the event of a run-off in the December polls.
He said the party has not taken a decision.
He was reacting to media reports attributed to the Deputy National Organiser of the party, that the PNC will be joining the NPP in case there is a run-off.
Abu Saddique Elba-Quarshie is reported to have said in a solidarity message to the NPP at its congress in Sekondi-Takoradi that the PNC hoped the NPP remained in power because it believed the party was capable of moving the country forward.
But that statement has angered the PNC’s Chairman who told Joy News that that is not the position of the party.
He said he was shocked to hear the reports “because an issue of supporting a political party in the event of a run-off is major decision and we are in this election to win and we believe we can make it”.
Alhaji Ramadan said the statement had embarrassed the party and gave the assurance that the contents of the statement read at the congress will examined and if it contains such information a decision will be taken.
He said although the party supported the NPP in the 2000 election run-off, it was a collective decision.
For him, a run-off in the 2008 elections will involve the PNC and another party and there was no need for the party to be thinking about partnering the NPP.
Alhaji Ramadan, whose son-in-law is the NPP vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, said he was restrained in discussing the issue because of his relationship with Dr. Bawumia.
He, however, noted that he will continue to hit at the NPP when they go wrong because it is a national duty.
He would not answer whether he would rather the NPP won the elections because his son-in-law then would be the vice president.
