Police and dogs search Hernandez home again

Police, dogs search Hernandez home again State police officers and dogs searched the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez again Saturday as they continue to investigate the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found nearby. The search of Hernandez’s sprawling home and vehicle in North Attleboro, Mass., started in the afternoon and lasted for more than three hours and involved several officers, including one with a crowbar, and locksmiths. Detectives and uniformed officers who searched the home, its backyard and playhouse did not comment to reporters on what they were looking for or what caused them to return to the house located not far from where the Patriots practice. Police have previously searched in and around the home as they try to figure out who killed Odin Lloyd. A jogger found Lloyd’s body in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez’s home on Monday. Family members said Friday that Lloyd had been dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died. Authorities have ruled Lloyd’s death a homicide. A spokeswoman for the Bristol District Attorney’s office declined to comment on the investigation Saturday. A state police spokesman referred questions to the district attorney’s office. Vesnina downs upset-minded Hampton in finals at Eastbourne • American qualifier Jamie Hampton’s remarkable run at Eastbourne, England ended in defeat Saturday against Elena Vesnina of Russia in the final of the Wimbledon warm-up. Vesnina won in straight sets — 6-2, 6-1 — denying Hampton’s bid to become the first American woman to take the title since Chanda Rubin beat Conchita Martinez in 2003. The 41st-ranked Hampton was playing in her first career final after upsetting fourth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and ninth-ranked Caroline Wozniacki. On the men’s side, Feliciano Lopez beat second-seeded Gilles Simon 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-0. Mexico, Brazil win in Confederations Cup play • Javier Hernandez sent Mexico home from the Confederations Cup on a high, heading in two goals to clinch a 2-1 victory over Japan in their final Group A match on Saturday in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The Manchester United striker met Andres Guardado’s cross in the 54th minute and headed in again in the 66th from Giovani Dos Santos’ corner. After Shinji Okazaki pulled one back for Japan in the 86th, Hernandez won a penalty but his weak effort was saved and he then sent the follow-up against the crossbar. In Salvador, Brazil, Neymar scored his third goal in three matches and Fred added two others as Brazil defeated Italy 4-2 to finish at the top of Group A. Substitute defender Dante opened the scoring from close range in first-half injury time, but Italy’s Emanuele Giaccherini scored the equalizer on a breakaway in the 51st minute. Neymar scored in the 55th minute with a well-placed free kick and Fred added to the lead from inside the area in the 66th before Italy pulled closer again with Giorgio Chiellini in the 71st. NCAA to ban coaches from scouting opponents • The NCAA will ban coaches from scouting future opponents at most live games in all sports. The ban takes effect in August. The legislation, originally passed in January, fell short of being overridden this week by the full membership. Though a majority of eligible Division I schools that cast votes — 154 of 279 — elected to eliminate the ban on live scouting, it represented only 55.2 percent. It takes 62.5 percent to override the measure. Ninety-six of the eligible schools didn’t vote. An NCAA committee proposed the ban because of improvements in video technology and the belief that live scouting could impact fair competition because some coaches believe they won’t have the same access to quality video.
