Police in the Central Region have assured the Presidential Candidates and members of the various political parties of adequate security as they campaign in the region. The Central Region is hosting members of the two largest political parties in the country with fears of clashes from supporters. However, the Central Region Police Commander DCOP Rose Atinga in an interview with Joy FM’s Matilda Asante said her outfit has deployed personnel who are well equipped to provide adequate security for all parties. She said the police do not anticipate any confrontation between supporters of the various political parties but maintained her outfit will be proactive to foil any such confrontation. “We don’t envisage any clashes, all the same, we are proactive and our intelligence is on the ground and we are ready to challenge any eventuality” she said confidently. She however promised fair policing for the leaders and supporters of the two main political parties. DCOP Atinga also advised leadership of both the NDC and NPP to talk to their supporters to refrain from acts that might provoke others, and which might degenerate into confrontations. She refuted the assertion that her outfit might be overstretched due to the sheer numbers of party supporters who will move to the region in support of their favourites candidates, saying “we do not have shortage of personnel, we are trained and this is not stressful at all to us.” The NDC, led by Prof. John Evans Atta Mills has returned to the Central Region to continue what they refer to as the “retail campaign” in an attempt to change their electoral fortunes in the region. The NPP on Thursday 21st August 2008 also began their campaign in the region ostensibly to consolidate their position in the region.
