The investigation into the assault on Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, the Northern Regional correspondent of Citi FM, by the Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has been taken over by the Northern Regional Police Command.
The incident occurred during the New Patriotic Party's parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency, where Mr. Aliu Mahama and his team reportedly attacked the media practitioner while he was covering the chaos that erupted during the counting process.
Mr Alabira filed an official report at the Yendi Divisional Police Command, recounting that he was providing a live report and had given the MP an opportunity to share his perspective on the violence.
However, instead of engaging in a dialogue, Alabira claimed that he was slapped by the MP, and his associates proceeded to assault him further, confiscating his phone in the process.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr Alabira revealed that despite having no physical injuries, the incident had caused him sleepless nights.
"Physically, there are no physical injuries, just that, for the past two days, I don’t know, maybe if I’m overthinking or something, I couldn’t sleep," Alabira stated.
Meanwhile, responding to inquiries about the party's stance on the matter, the party's General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong indicated that the party had not yet received a formal report on the assault.
The investigation by the Northern Regional Police Command signals a shift in authority to ensure a thorough and unbiased examination of the incident involving the MP and the journalist.
