Madina Police have cautioned and discharged members of the pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance after the organization held a public political event without securing police permission.
The caution came after a marathon meeting held between leaders of the alliance and Madina Police on Monday.
The Let My Vote Count Alliance had its maiden rally last week at Dome Kwabenya, a suburb of Accra, without the consent of the police and in violation of the Public Order Act.
The rally was intended to educate the public on the need for NPP leaders to petition the Supreme Court over alleged electoral fraud in last Decembers presidential vote.
Leaders of the group, Abu Ramadan of the PNC, Kwabena Bonfeh, a former Youth Organiser of the CPP, David Asante and several others took turns addressing those assembled on the issue.
Police were enraged by the group’s action and therefore invited its leaders for questioning.
On Monday, some leading members of the NPP, including Deputy Communication Director Sammy Awuku and lawyer Mike Ocquaye Jnr., accompanied leaders of the Alliance to the police station, Joy News’ Benjamin Tetteh reported.
He said the meeting was held behind closed doors with journalists poking around for details on the meeting.
After several minutes, it emerged that the police cautioned and discharged the members of alliance, warning them to play by the rules and respect the Public Order Act.
The Alliance held its second rally on Sunday, this time in Eastern Region and with police approval.
