The Northern regional Police Command has warned supporters of political parties to refrain from taunting opponents with wild jubilation across the region.
A statement issued by the Command and signed by DCOP Ofosu Mensah Gyeabuor, Northern regional Police Commander categorically stated that until the Electoral Commission (EC) declares the final result of the presidential run-off held last Sunday December 28, it will not hesitate to deal accordingly with anyone who flouts the law.
The Northern region has since Ghana´s return to multi-party democracy in 1992 been largely the stronghold of the NDC.
The statement follows wild jubilation by party supporters especially in Tamale, the regional Capital of the Northern region, on Monday, upon hearing media projection of the result in favour of Prof John Evans Attah Mills who contested on the ticket of the opposition National Democratic Congress against Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The statement bemoaned the development and urged residents in the area not to incite provocation and urged the people to be patient and wait for the final declaration by the EC, saying the security is in full control of the situation.
Meanwhile supporters especially of the NDC have restrained themselves and remain calm sitting by radio and television sets in pockets while waiting anxiously for the final declaration.
A joint police cum military persons could be seen dotted at vantage points and flash points while security vehicles could be seen patrolling more importantly the capital city so as to forestall any untoward skirmishes, maintain order and keep the peace.

It has come to the notice of the Northern regional police Command that while the results of the December 28, 2008 presidential run-off has not yet been declared by the Electoral Commissioner in accordance with the law and electoral procedures, some supporters of political parties have taken the law into their own hands by attempting to jubilate through reckless riding and driving taunting perceived political opponents, riding motorbikes in groups to run through crowd with the aim of causing confusion etc.
The police wishes to inform that the command is unhappy about this unfortunate development and therefore cautioning the general public to exercise circumspect not to attack anybody to avoid provocation;
That the police and related security agencies in the region are in control of the security situation in the region and that anyone who will infringe on the law will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
