The Acting Director of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori says the Ghana Police Service has put in place plans to clamp down any disturbances that result from the announcement of nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCEs) positions.

According to him, the Police administration has directed all regional commanders to increase the presence of security in their various areas after some demonstrations were recorded in some parts of the country.

Speaking on Midday News on Joy FM, ACP Ofori said “therefore all the regions have their deployment plans based on what they know and what they have. I can say that Accra, for instance, deployment has been done to all the 14 divisions supported by the regional operations and national operations as well and the Police are very alert.”

This comes after the youth of Odododiodoo and Bukom took to the streets to protest the alleged removal of the current Mayor of Accra from office.

It follows reports that Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, will be replaced by Elizabeth Sackey, the former Deputy Minister of the Greater Accra Region.

The residents were seen with red arm bands and head gear demonstrating and calling on the President to maintain Mr Sowah as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly boss.

Mr Sowah distanced himself from the demonstrations, stating that despite the agitations, he supports the President’s decision to choose any new candidate he deems fit for the position.

Later the Police Service arrested four residents in Odododiodoo for leading the protest in the constituency over the alleged removal of Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah from office.

The four; Salaami Bukari, 36, Daniel Opare Oman, 43, Edward Holm, 38, and Daniel Clottey, 41, according to a press statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kwesi Ofori, blocked a section of the road in Jamestown by burning tyres on Saturday.

ACP Ofori told JoyNews’ Ernest Manu that the arrested persons have been detained for investigations.

“In addition they were able to stop the disorderly behaviour, especially in areas where tires and missiles were being thrown into the major road,” he stated.

He added that the Police are still patrolling the Odododiodoo Constituency to ensure no more demonstrations are recorded.
