The police administration has refused permit to two rival demonstrations scheduled to come off on Republic Day, July 1.

Accra Police PRO DSP Freeman Tettey told Joy News, for a “litany of reasons” tomorrow’s demonstration will not be allowed to go ahead.

A group calling itself the Concerned Ghanaians for Responsible Governance, had planned to picket in front of the Flagstaff House in Accra.

Their action is to urge President Mahama to take action to solve the worsening economic situation in the country instead of resorting to "knee-jerk reactions"

But another group known as One Thousand Man March is staging what looks like a counter demonstration tomorrow.

The group, purporting to have links with the governing National Democratic Congress, says it is marching in support of the President under thses difficult times.

Member of the group, Koku Mawuli Nanegbeh says they will use the march to encourage Ghanaians to patronize made in Ghana goods.

However, the police say they will not allow the two groups to converge at their various locations.

DSP Freeman Tettey said the security would be overstretched at the Republic Day deploying “a lot of personnel and resources” for other equally important engagements.

Criminals usually strike on public holidays, he remarked. The police would therefore prefer to deploy men on the streets and at beaches to ensure law and order.

DSP Tettey said the police have proposed that organizers of both events reschedule their dates and venues.

He warned they will use all legal means possible to stop the demonstrations and take action against recalcitrant persons.
