Members of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) are divided over a decision to embark on strike after a recent congress held in Kumasi failed to reach an agreement over proposals to embark on strike. Some members are pushing for the strike over delays in the payment of their single spine salary arrears. They say they are unhappy with the stance taken by the National Executives over delay in payment of their arrears. The Ashanti Regional branch of the association have accused the national leadership of conniving with government to buy time. Edmond Peprah, the Kumasi local chapter Chairman of POTAG said the conditions of service of the Polytechnic teachers expired since 2006. He told Joy News fresh negotiations of their service conditions were expected in 2007 but there has not been any communication from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) in that regard. Mr Preprah said after May 3, a strike by the Ashanti regional branch will be one of the options they will use to bring attention to their plight since several appeals to the National POTAG to take action have been unsuccessful. However, General Secretary of POTAG Oswald Atiga told Joy News there was no consensus on proposals for the Association to go on strike. According to him, any strike by the Kumasi branch now would be illegal. He explained that there was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FWSC and POTAG stipulating three payment installments of their arrears which the National Executives have agreed to. According to him especially that the majority of POTAG members have not agreed to go on strike, it will be very wrong for the Ashanti regional chapter to do so.
