Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah has disclosed that the country’s Presidential jet is currently unfit for use and has been sent abroad for extensive maintenance.
In a Facebook post on Friday, 23 May, Dr Boamah revealed that the aircraft is undergoing what he described as “three months of therapy”—maintenance, repair, and overhaul work needed to restore the jet to a “fairly usable” condition.
This revelation directly responded to claims from some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang chartered a private jet for her return to Ghana on Thursday, 22 May.
The Vice President had been on medically induced leave in the United Kingdom, and her return journey sparked criticism from sections of the NPP who questioned the mode of her travel.
Dr Boamah did not hold back in his rebuttal, stating that it was the Akufo-Addo administration that had allowed the Presidential jet to deteriorate.
“Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this,” he wrote.
He added that among other issues, the jet’s fuel tank was corroded – a clear indication of the jet’s poor condition.
He further stressed that the current government has inherited a Presidential aircraft in a state of disrepair.
“The Presidential jet has been in the ‘hospital’ abroad… it is unfit for use presently,” Dr Boamah said.
