Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. Kwasi Osei, says the parents of three children who were kept indoors for eight years under terrible insanitary conditions, could be suffering from paranoid-schizophrenia. The sickness, according to the Psychiatrist, is a condition that causes people to fear the unknown. Dr. Kwasi Osei said he is convinced the parents, especially the father, may be suffering from a psychological disorder because of the filth the family is living in. He said persons suffering from the sickness "...thinks other people are out there against him or her or their children and so they will not allow the children to mingle with people because they [believe the people] are evil". Dr Osei also believes paranoid-schizophrenia is one of the most common mental sicknesses in the country. He was optimistic that with long term treatment the parents of the children can be cured if they were diagnosed with the mental disorder. He said the children must also be sent to a psychiatrist for counselling to re-orient them into society. The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service at Madina, a suburb of Accra, rescued the three children last Friday July 25 after eight years of seclusion from the public. The 3 children, two little girls and an older eight-year-old boy, have been sharing their living quarters with livestock and kept away from friends and family since birth. Joy News' Beatrice Adu, who has been to the house where the children were kept in Madina, said the three kids were kept under serious insanitary conditions. She said the back of the house leading to the four-bedroom apartment has an animal farm filled with ducks, fowls, and sheep. The surroundings of the house are overgrown with weeds, Beatrice reported, adding that the corridor leading to their room is also filled with a strong stench. During a chat with Beatrice, the children said they have been told by their parents that everyone outside their house was evil. Mother of the children, Jane Mensah, said the children do not attend school because their father Fledge Mensah-Lartey, can teach the kids at home. Madina DOVVSU Commander, ASP Christine Srofenyo, told Joy News her office is arranging with the Social Welfare Department to provide temporary shelter for the children while investigations continue. ASP Srofenyo also confirmed that she has arranged for the parents to see a Clinical Psychologist to ascertain the state of mind of the parents. Meanwhile, the Madina DOVVSU is appealing to the public to help trace the family of the parents of the children. Their mother hails from Sempe in Accra while the father is said to hail from James town, also in Accra.
