Students in public universities are likely to pay 50 per cent more for tuition next academic year. They will also pay full cost for electricity consumption, following claims government is to reduce subvention to tertiary institutions from the Ghana Education Trust Fund. Students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology say they have sighted documents indicating government support of GHc540,000 for the 2007-2008 academic year has been reduced to GHc290,000 for the coming year. The President of the Student Representative Council, Kwaku Sekyere told Elton John Brobbey of Luv FM in Kumasi that under the new arrangement tuition fees to be paid by students for next academic year which begins in August, will go up by half. Electricity service which students have enjoyed for free over the years will now attract GHc60 every semester. Mr. Sekyere expressed fear many students may be forced out of school as government passes on cost of university education to students.
