All pubs and restaurants in Osu will not operate this evening, Friday, February 25, 2022.
This is part of a 3-day ban on noisemaking to allow for the burial and final rites of the late Paramount Chief of the area, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI.
In an interview with JoyNews, the Public Relation Officer for the Osu Stool, Nii Adotey Maclean, said “operating would be disrespectful to our father who is gone.”
“That is what we mean. So you can’t be jubilating whiles your father is gone. So you doing that means that you are not in conformity with us.
“And that is why I am saying that those pubs that will be playing music and they aren’t found .. they should give us that due respect,” he said.
Osu, which is largely referred to as the heart of Accra’s nightlife is home to several popular pubs and restaurants which operate deep into the night.
But they have to suspend operations at least for the duration of the ban.
The Osu Stool's PRO stated that because Osu is a cosmopolitan area, they would be flexible in their ban approach.
“Today is Friday and it’s the wake keeping and we know that people will definitely go somewhere and have some drinks but I mean they should bring the sounds and everything down and let’s be solemn,” he noted.
He further stated that anyone who flouts the bans order will be taken through the customary rite of the land.
He went on to say that any violator would be forced to pacify the land because they had desecrated it.
“Some goods would be seized, some shop owners would be cautioned and asked to see the custodian of the land in relation to what they have to do to pacify the land.”
