The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Awutu Senya East, Michael Essuma Mensah has commended the victorious Kasoa Zongo football team for winning this year's Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup.
Kasoa Zongo was crowned champions of the 24-community tournament over the weekend after they defeated Hohoe Zongo 1:0 in the finals on Sunday night in Accra.
Players from the Kasoa team also swept prestigious individual awards of the tournament, Best Player and Top Scorer.
Players, officials and community leaders of Kasoa Zongo called on the MCE and his executives to present the trophies.
Addressing the champions, the MCE expressed his pride for the success, saying their victory has brought honour to the Kasoa municipality.
"I am really impressed with what you have achieved,' the MCE said.
"The players and technical team members have brought honour to us and they deserve lots of commendations," he stated.
"If there are many Zongos in Ghana and 24 were selected for this competition and Kasoa emerged as champions, we can say that this Kasoa team sitting here right now is the national Zongo champions of Ghana," he added amidst applause from people present.
Mr Essuma also expressed his delight at the diversity of the Kasoa team, saying he is impressed by the blend between Muslims and non-Muslims.
"The background of the team is so beautiful. There is Charles, there is Adu Boahen and there are two Michaels. And then our Muslim brothers in there," he noted.
"The beautiful thing is that when you were on the pitch, you worked together as a team. No one said this is Michael and I am Razak so I won't pass the ball to him. You worked together as a team and achieved the results together to bring honour to us. We are proud of you."
The 6th edition of the Sheikh Sharubtu Ramadan Cup was well attended and the grand finale between Kasoa and Hohoe Zongo was watched by thousands online.
Many dignitaries, including the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, three-time African Footballer of the year Abedi Pele, and Black Stars Coach CK Akonnor, watched the finals.
The tournament is played every year at the end of Ramadan.
