Former President Jerry John Rawlings has commended the rescue team and other volunteers who through their tireless efforts, saved lives after a multi-storey Melcom shopping centre at Achimota collapsed last Wednesday.
Over Eighty persons, mostly staff of Melcom, were trapped in the debris out of which 14 were pulled out dead, by rescuers exactly a week ago.
Former President Rawlings visited the 37 Military hospital where some of injured are receiving treatment, donated assorted items and Ghc 6000 cash to the victims. The items included 20 bags of rice, 20 crates of Milo drinks, 20 Cartons of biscuit, 10 crates of milk and 10 bags of sugar.
Mr. Rawlings also congratulated the Defence Minister Lt. General Henry Smith and his team for the high level of professional competence exhibited in their efforts to save more lives even after their Israeli counterparts left after spending two days to help in the rescue efforts.
He expressed his condolence to the bereaved families and prayed for speedy recovery for the injured.
