Stakeholders within the financial technology space are calling on the government for a further reduction in the Electronic Transaction Levy to help expand the usage of digital payment in Ghana.
The fintech players say based on their research, the e-levy charges are discouraging a number of Ghanaians from paying for goods and services through electronic transfer.
According to the General Manager for Cellulant Ghana, Eric Quartey, the development is likely to affect the financial sector of the economy.
Speaking at the MoMo Stakeholder Forum organised by MTN Ghana, Mr. Quartey said the should be further reduction of the E-Leyy to encourage digital transformation.
“I know this is very sensitive, but I have to say it. We know the government has reduced the rate but there should be a further reduction to encourage digital adoption.”
“If this is done, I am sure it will help to pool more numbers within this space”, he added.
Head of Product and Service, Mobile Money Limited, MTN Ghana, Sylvia Otuo-Acheampong, said her outfit will partner with industry players to improve the space.

She explained that her outfit will continue to support the government’s agenda to drive the digitization agenda.
“We are working on improving this space, it is very important to the economy at large. MTN Ghana has been engaging government on so many projects and we will continue to do so”, she added.
The MoMo stakeholder forum was to deliberate on how to address the barriers to adoption of digital payment in Ghana. The forum was under the theme” Addressing barriers to digital payment in Ghana”
