Local government expert George Kyei Baffour is raising concerns about the level of competence of the president’s nominees of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (DCE) as many of them are being rejected by their respective assemblies.
He said the rate of rejection of the president’s appointees and nominees is worrying.
Joy news reported that the president's nominations are fiercely resisted by grass root supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress, youth groups and assembly members. Some groups have even gone to the extent of destroying properties in protest against some nominees.
Some MMDCEs had to lobby and plead for endorsements from their assemblies. This was the case of the MCE for Ejumako Enyam Essiem, Peter Koomson.
The most recent disapproval of MCEs and DCEs was in the Wulensi District. In Assin North and Assin South, the MCEs were rejected two consecutive times by the assembly members.
In the Northern parts of Ghana, DCE for Builsa South, Norbert Awuley was also rejected despite his pleas. His colleague in Kasena Nankana West District suffered the same fate.
In the Ashanti Region, Paul Kingsley Avero who was nominated for the Asante Akim for the second time in ten days failed to get the approval of the assembly. Adam Idissa, nominated for the Kwabre district in the same region was also rejected after the first round of voting.
Mr. Samuel Sarpong, the Central Regional minister shared his views with Joy News concerning the disapproval of DCEs and MCEs. He said that people have to put Ghana first and anyone who wants to work against the DCE does not want development.
