Fire has gutted a slum quarters at Railways, near Graphic road in Accra. The Thursday night fire, which started around 11:00 pm completely razed down dozens of structures.Joy News' Anny Osabutey, reporting from the scene, said firemen had been struggling to control the blaze. He said the fire kept spreading quickly because most of the structures were wooden and contain items such as gas cylinders which fueled the blaze. It has not yet been established what might have triggered the fire but residents believe it might have been caused by one of slum dwellers who lit a candle in his room and left it to purchase something.Residents were devastated and could barely speak, Anny reported, some desperately tried to salvage their belongings in vain. One of the slum dwellers who was taking his bath at the time the fire started told Anny that all he has left is a piece of towel wrapped around his waist.Meanwhile the Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Prince Billy Anaglatey told Joy News it is too early to determine what caused the fire but noted that investigations will continue. He also stated that fire fighters found it a huge channel accessing the fire scene. No casualties were recorded, he said.
