A group in Nkwanta North in the Volta Region has threatened to demonstrate against government if the stalled construction works on the Nkwanta-Oti Damanko road does not resume by July 17.

Construction works on the 70 kilometers road has stalled since 2015.

China Jiangxi International Corporation firm was awarded the contract in 2011. Construction work was expected to be completed in 2013 but has delayed till date. 

Makaniyo Jonathan, the spokesperson for Concerned Youth of Nkwanta North said they expect the contractor to resume construction works soon or they take to the streets.

"We are suspending all actions that he [contractor] will meet that timeline. However, if nothing happens after the deadline, we will embark on a legal demonstration to press home our demand," he told Joy News' Fred Quame Asare.

The stretch which links Nkwanta North and South in the Volta Region forms part of the Eastern Corridor road, one of the President's major campaign promise which has been mentioned in the State of the Nation Address. 

Checks by Joy News revealed that some drains were also constructed in Kpasa and Kibi townships. Some work was done between Kpassa and Kibi where chippings were applied to level the road.

However, before the contractor left the site, some huge stones were placed on the section where the chippings have been applied to help protect the surface. This development has created inconvenience and danger for motorists and residents who use the road. 

Mabru Paul, a resident lamented, "the road has become very dangerous to the extent that two people have lost their lives already due to the blockade of the road. We are pleading with the government to ensure the contractor returns to the site to complete the work."

The dusty road is also causing some health problems to market women who sell along the stretch.

"The dust is too much, we are pleading with the government to bring the contractor back to the site. Are we not Ghanaians? Government must help construct the road for us so we also have the feeling of being Ghanaians," Amina Adams complained.

Fuseini Abdulai said "I sell okra and other vegetables, these items are exposed to dust which is not good. We fall sick due to the dust, we are tired. If the road is not constructed, we will not vote in November." 

Roads and Highways Minister, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini in June 2016 told Francis Abban on JOYNEWS current affairs problem, Pulse that the contractor working on the Eastern Corridor roads has been invited to provide a report regarding the state of the road.

He said based on that the report, the Ministry will take action.
