A driver and a passenger were shot dead at dawn last Tuesday when suspected armed robbers attacked a passenger bus at Dadeeso in the Western Region.
The robbers, who were said to have laid ambush between Dadeeso and Juaboso, suddenly emerged from the bush to order the driver of the passenger vehicle, which was heading to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, to stop.
According to the Western Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Alex Quainoo, the driver did not heed to the order and sped off.
The action of the driver was said to have infuriated the robbers, who fired at the vehicle, killing the driver and a passenger instantly.
After the driver had been killed, the vehicle rammed into a hilly place and came to a halt.
The robbers then boarded the vehicle and allegedly robbed the passengers of their money, mobile phones and other valuables and bolted.
According to Mr Quainoo, when the police arrived at the scene of the robbery, the armed robbers had fled.
He said a suspect, who was yet to be identified, was arrested at Dadeeso and was being held for further investigations.
He said the suspect, according to members of the community, was not known to them and they suspected that he might be one of those who had killed the driver and the passenger and robbed the other passengers in the vehicle.
He said a mob had besieged the premises of the Dadeeso Police Station, demanding justice, but the police had managed to bring the situation under control.
Mr Quainoo said for some time now the Western Region had become unattractive to such activities as a result of the intensity of day and night patrols by the police.
He assured the public that the Police Command was in control of the situation and would ensure public safety and security.
He said a team, led by the regional crime officer, had been dispatched to the crime scene to carry out further investigations.
