The Rotary Club of Accra, Kanda, has refurbished the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound in Akotex, within the Mamobi Area.

The Club which is noted for many humanitarian acts towards society contributed generously to the recommissioning of the compound – the only one within the Ayawaso North municipality.  

The compound was first established in 2015 as a CHPS zone under the auspices of the Islamic Center for Community Affairs in the Akotex area and served as a point of service delivery for Child welfare activities.

However, according to the Municipal Health Director for the Ayawaso North, Dr Sophia Quist, despite the success of the zone over the years, with increasing demand and growing population culminating in a high rate of maternal mortality within the district, it had become necessary to convert the edifice into one that was more equipped to “deliver essential health services right at the doorstep of the community”.

President of the Rotary Club of Accra-Kanda, Nana Yaa Adu revealed that the club was even more compelled to respond to the call of the health directorate particularly because all its members had already taken the initiative towards the refurbishment of the compound.

According to Nana Yaa, “we knew then that the facility was destined for greatness”.

She added “Our club is honoured to help sponsor the recommissioning of this facility and we hope to continue working together to make it an integral part of the community”

The Chairperson for the event, Regional Director of Health Services for the Greater Accra Region, Dr Mrs, Charity Sarpong stressed the WHOs mandate for access to good quality healthcare by 2030 and as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

She noted that one of the strategies of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in achieving this goal is to use the CHPS strategy to bring collaboration between community residents and the health centres.

“The GHS will continue to support this CHPS compound by bringing health workers to serve the compound”, she promised.

She also stressed the urgency and importance of getting the Covid-19 vaccine and used the opportunity to encourage people to access the vaccine at the newly refurbished CHPS compound.

The Medical Superintendent of the Mamobi General Hospital, Dr Dorcas Anfu Okine, who was also present at the event congratulated the Municipal Health Director for expanding the efforts of GHS in aiming for universal health coverage.

She was excited that the CHPS compound would help to manage diseases before they are referred to Mamobi General Hospital.
