The Rotary Club of Tarkwa recently organised its annual ‘Walk with Rotary’, a campaign aimed at both raising funds and creating awareness to combat the debilitating disease of polio.
The event, which was in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of UMaT saw enthusiastic participation from club members, guests, volunteers, and the general public.

Spotted in their colourfully branded polio t-shirts with banners and placards waving high, participants embarked on a journey through the principal streets of Tarkwa, symbolising the strides being taken in the fight against polio.
Each step taken by the participants was a step closer to ensuring that no child suffers from the debilitating effects of polio across the world.
Polio, a highly infectious viral disease, primarily affects young children and can lead to paralysis and even death.
Despite significant progress by the Rotary Foundation in global polio eradication efforts, pockets of the disease persist, necessitating continued vigilance and action.

Speaking to the press, the Club President, Rotarian Abdel-Razak Yakubu stated that the walk served multiple purposes including raising funds to support vaccination campaigns, research, and infrastructure necessary for eradicating polio worldwide.
He added that the walk also created a platform for spreading awareness about polio and the importance of vaccination.

Finally, the event provided an opportunity for community members to learn more about the Rotary Club's commitment to service and its role in global health initiatives.
The electrifying ‘jama’ from students of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) caught the attention of bystanders and other road users.
Participants took the opportunity to engage them in conversations to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding polio vaccination.

As the walk concluded at the Akoon Club House – Gold Fields, participants gathered for an aerobics session and refreshments where club representatives reiterated the importance of sustained efforts in the fight against polio.
The Club President, Abdel-Razak Yakubu expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and volunteers for their contributions to the success of the walk, adding that it served as a testament to the power of collective action in addressing global health challenges.
