Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), has appointed Mr. Steve Noi as Tournament Commissioner for the upcoming Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) 2014-15.
Mr. Steve Noi has a rich history in sports administration that included senior positions in institutions in South Africa such as the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) (Head of Department – Sport and Recreation), University Sport South Africa (USSA) (Member of the national executive committee), Confederation of University and College Sport Association (CUCSA) (Secretary General), International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) (Vice President – Africa and board member - 2001-2013) to name a few.
Although Mr. Noi spent approximately 23 years in South Africa, he is a born and bred Ghanaian who is on semi retirement and who has decided that he wants to invest the knowledge and experience he has gathered over the years into the development of sports in Ghana.
“When I picked up the changes in Ghana Rugby I followed the exploits of the Herbert Mensah-led administration with great interest and it did not take a lot to convince me that I wanted to be part of this exciting development,” Mr. Noi said.
Mr. Noi continued to say that he is also aware of the admirable achievements of Mr. Mensah during his reign as Chairman of the renowned Ghana football club, Kumasi Asante Kotoko F.C.
Mr. Mensah welcoming Mr. Noi to the Ghana Rugby Family said it was a promising sign that Ghanaians who have spent so many years in the Diaspora are offering their rich experience to Ghana.
“Mr. Noi has a wealth of experience in sports administration and given the fact that Ghana Rugby has been ran for 11 years with people who have none or very little experience in sports administration and even less in Rugby administration makes the partnership with Mr. Noi so much more significant,” Mr. Mensah said.
Mr. Mensah said although Rugby in Ghana will still be ran on a volunteer basis given the financial position of the Union, there are definite plans to find the money to eventually invite people like Mr. Noi to come on Board on a full time paid basis.
Present at the appointment ceremony were Mr. George Ladipo who represented the Clubs in CentWest and Mr. Abdul-Aziz Issah representing the Greater Accra Clubs.
The Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) 2014-15 is slated to kick off on 1 November 2014 between six Clubs from Greater Accra (Accra Sharks RFC, Cosmos Buffaloes RFC, Dansoman Hurricanes RFC, Idas Sports RFC, Legon Titans RFC and Tema Anchors RFC) and six Clubs from CentWest (Abura Bombers RFC, Aggreyguaa RFC, Mfantadisc RFC, Oguaaman Ocean Warriors RFC, UCC Spartans, Westside RFC).
