The Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South in the Savannah Region, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has decried the prevalence of child abuse in the country and called for immediate and collective action to protect the nation’s vulnerable.
Referencing the 2023 Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, the MP revealed that approximately 22% of children aged 1 to 14 are subjected to violent discipline, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
"Protecting children and vulnerable groups is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative," she stressed in a post by Parliament on Facebook.
Her remarks were prompted by a recent harrowing video circulating on social media, showing a 12-year-old child tied with nylon ropes and brutally assaulted by three adults.

Ms Zuwera expressed grave concern about the incident but praised the Ghana Police Service for their swift intervention.
She urged fellow lawmakers to take a firmer stance.
"As lawmakers and custodians of human rights, we must intensify our efforts to address these pressing issues."
She proposed the rollout of nationwide sensitisation campaigns to educate communities about children’s rights, foster a culture of zero tolerance for abuse, and encourage the reporting of violations.
She also advocated for strengthening legal protections and improving the enforcement of existing laws.
“Let us reaffirm our collective resolve to champion human rights, protect the vulnerable, and build a future where every child in Ghana and beyond can live in safety and dignity,” she stated.
