The second edition of the Read to Inspire Series held at the Korle Gonno Community Library featured a book by prominent Ghanaian author and writer Ama Ata Aidoo, 'The Girl Who Can.'

The initiative, organized by the Duo Concept Foundation, is to inspire students to cultivate the spirit of reading, as well as become ambassadors of the initiative.
The 2024 edition brought together, pupils from some selected basic schools within Korle Gonno, a suburb of Greater Accra, to participate in knowledge-sharing and personal development exercises and serve as ambassadors of reading.

Speaking to the pupils, the lead facilitator of the Duo Concept Foundation, Kate Addo, expressed the need to encourage reading to improve discipline, self-awareness, and communication.

Touching on the choice of book for this edition, Ms Addo touched on some of the contributions of the late Ama Ata to Ghanaian literature, dwelling on her style of writing, relatable scenes, and her overall inspiration as a woman who served as a great mentor to many across the world.

According to her, the choice of the book speaks to the modern-day struggles faced by the girl child expressed by the author in the book.

Adding that, the story is relatable and tells the present-day struggles and challenges of many adventurous and inspiring young women.

"The Girl Who Can” by Ama Ata was read by special dignitaries, including Madam Doreen Hammond of the Mirror Newspaper, Dr Wale Okediran, Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Associations, as well as Peer Mentor Kingsley Ogbamey Tettey.

The dignitaries in attendance took turns appreciating the efforts of the legendary writer, who immensely contributed to the advancement of women and girls' child development through their works.

The Duo Concept Foundation is a nonprofit organisation which aids children and the less privileged, providing support and educational reform programmes across the country.

The organisation was co-founded on behalf of Panin and Kakra Acheampong in 2010.
