An Accra Circuit Court is expected to, on Monday, July 13, 2015, deliver its judgment on the case of the Takoradi-based doctor accused of sodomizing a 16-year-old.
Joy News broke the story in October last year and although Dr Sulley Ali-Gabass initially denied the accusation, he was subsequently picked up by police and has been on trial since.
His alleged victim who has been diagnosed with HIV-AIDS, says he has had to change his name to avoid stigma from friends.
Dr. Sulley Ali-Gabass, a senior medical officer at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi, had anal sex with a 16-year-old senior secondary school student who has now been diagnosed of HIV/AIDS.
Joy News' Manasseh Azure Awuni who broke the story recalled when he first met Aziz (victim) in the surgical ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital in October last year, the boy felt hopeless: He could neither sit nor lie on his back.
Apart from the pain from his anal surgery, the 16-year-old-boy alleged that a number of sexual encounters with Dr Ali-Gabass resulted in the injury to his anus and the HIV infection.
When Joy News contacted Dr. Sulley Ali-Gabass, he confessed having sex with the boy, but denied infecting him with HIV.
Nine months after the story broke, Aziz's gloomy outlook about life has changed into that of hope: the hope of becoming a human rights lawyer.
Aziz said it is the people who came to his life after the story who have given him that hope.
The Gender and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, through her Human Rights Advocacy Center, reached out to him before handing him over to the Department of Social Welfare.
Meanwhile, AZIZ is back to school and has changed the course he is studying. He has also changed his name to avoid stigma from friends and people who knew him.
Meanwhile, Dr Sulley Ali-Gabass is currently on remand at the Nsawam Prison.
Laywer for Aziz, Francis Xavier Sasu believes justice will be served considering how far the case has travelled.
