There was sporadic shooting in the Tamale Metropolis last night moments after the arrival of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag-bearer to the politically charged metropolis on Sunday evening.
There have not been any reported casualties or arrests by the security forces in connection with the incident.
The sporadic gunshots brought social and commercial activities in the central business district into limbo as people were seen rushing home.
The incident that began around 7p.m. at some parts of the metropolis lasted for about an hour until the arrival of the security forces to bring the situation under control.
The shooting reportedly followed a clash between some supporters of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading to the burning of some motorbikes.
No one seems to know what brought about the sporadic shooting but there were accusations and counter accusations from both parties of who started the shooting.
Supporters of both parties were spotted earlier in the day wearing their respective party paraphernalia in ecstatic moods.
While the NPP followers were welcoming Dr Bawumia into the metropolis from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, their NDC counterparts were also inaugurating an Atta Mills and John Mahama fan club outside the Kaladan Park.
Dr Bawumia had earlier been ushered into Tamale by many enthusiastic supporters on motorbikes and in vehicles.
They converged at the Tamale Jubilee Park where he addressed a rally.
According to him, an NPP government under Nana Addo’s leadership would revamp the rice and sheanut industry by resourcing farmers in the area.
He also assured that adequate attention would be paid to the youth by creating opportunities for them to realise their respective potentials.
"My nomination is a testimony of youth involvement in Nana's government" he stated.
Dr Bawumia further said that the NPP was the only party that wielded the magic wand to transform the nation's economy to ensure that the fortunes of the people were improved.
"We shall also continue the good works of the Kufuor administration that has already improved on the lot of Ghanaians."
