The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) have intensified sensitization for informal sector workers to enroll in pension schemes to guarantee financial security after retirement.
In collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), SSNIT held a regional engagement forum in Kumasi to boost pension literacy and encourage active participation in pension schemes.
The engagement forms part of a nationwide outreach programme aimed at improving understanding of pension schemes among workers, with a special focus on self-employed individuals.
Speaking under the theme: “Empowered Unions Secure the Future: Deepening Pension Literacy Across Ghana,” Deputy Director-General in-charge of Operations and Benefits at SSNIT, Adam Sulley, urged all employees to be concerned about their pension.
He disclosed that SSNIT’s fund has seen significant growth, rising from GH¢20 billion in 2024 to GH¢25 billion in 2025, attributing the increase to strategic investments.
Mr Sulley further advised workers to regularly monitor their contributions and ensure employers remit payments promptly to safeguard their retirement benefits.
On death benefits, he explained that where accurate information about a deceased contributor is readily available, it takes approximately two weeks for beneficiaries to receive payments.
He added that SSNIT is collaborating with the National Identification Authority and the Births and Deaths Registry to improve data access and speed up claims processing.
He also announced the introduction of a virtual branch system to enhance digital service delivery and reduce congestion at SSNIT offices.
“All workers must take advantage of SSNIT to secure their future. We have strengthened our systems to ensure prompt payment of benefits, including death claims, once the right information is available.”
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, commended SSNIT for the initiative, noting that such engagements help build trust and improve workers’ understanding of pension operations.
He encouraged workers to actively participate in the scheme, stressing that it guarantees long-term financial security.
“This engagement is important in building confidence among workers. We urge all workers, especially those in the informal sector, to join SSNIT and secure their future,” he stated.
