The board of trustees of the Stadium Disaster Fund says it has since the inception of the fund taken care of dozens of children of the victims of the May 9 disaster.

This was disclosed during a wreath-laying ceremony at the forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium as Ghana marks the 13th anniversary of the disaster, which claimed 127 lives.

Secretary to the Fund, C. C Annan says the board will ensure each child of the deceased persons is educated to the tertiary level.

"Tertiary education was not part of the mandate but the board realizing the potentials of some of the children decided to give necessary support to those who will qualify.

"The population of the children at the inception of the fund was 130. As at this academic year, we have 90 of them in school: 55 at the basic school level, 26 in senior high school, and 9 at the tertiary level... The youngest child is in class five.

"The board will continue to make strenuous efforts to ensure that as many of the children receive tertiary education", Mr. Annan indicated.

Already, five of the children have completed tertiary education, he added.

The May 9 incident occurred during a match between arch rivals, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, when supporters failed to accept the results of the game leading to violence.

The fund was established to help educate children of football fans, who died as a result of the violence that erupted.
