The Black Stars of Ghana toppled the Chipolopolo of Zambia at the top of Group D with a hard fought 2-0 victory over the crocodiles of Lesotho in a world cup qualifier played in Masero.
John Boye, against the run of play opened Ghana's account with four minutes left in the first half with the Stars captain Asamoah Gyan continuing his impeccable goal harvest with the second goal in the second half.
It was a must win match for the Stars who needed nothing less than victory to secure top spot in Group D after Zambia had carelessly dropped points at home to Sudan in a pulsating 1-1 drawn game.
But the win was never going to come easy. The Crocodiles had been humiliated with a 7-0 annihilation in Kumasi by the Black Stars and revenge was on their minds.
Even though qualification to the World Cup was beyond reach, the Crocodiles appeared set to spoil the party for the Black Stars and to avenge the defeat suffered months ago.
The Crocodiles were ferocious in the first half with the Black Stars back peddling for most part.
Goal Keeper Fatau Dauda came up with some superb saves to keep the Stars' hopes alive.
Just when the first half was inching to a close, John Boye scored Ghana's opener in the 40th minute.
The result appeared to have calmed the nerves of the Stars who needed to grind victory from the crucial game.
The Crocodiles continued with their onslaught but the Stars defence were resolute.
Sulley Ali Muntari was substituted for Agyemang Badu but the AC Milan star was apparently unhappy with the substitution and refused to sit on the bench.
Gyan scored his 35th international goal for the Stars by scoring the second goal late in the second half.
Two nil it ended in the game with the Stars sitting on top and needing just a draw in their home game against Zambia to book qualification into the next and final stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
