After the first day of matches in each of the four groups, a total of 14 goals were scored.
The goals were scored by different players - 4 goals were scored in Group A (Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Senegal, Zambia); 4 also in Group B (Angola, Burkina Faso, Cote d Ivoire, Sudan); 5 in Group C (Gabon, Morocco, Niger, Tunisia) and 2 in Group D (Botswana, Ghana, Guinea, Mali).
The biggest scoreline was in Group C where co-host Gabon beat Niger 2-0.
Three teams have won by 2-1 scoreline (Zambia, Angola, Tunisia), with 4 winning by a lone goal (Equatorial Guinea, Cote d Ivoire, Ghana, Mali) - Since 1996 and with the introduction of the format to 16 teams, the eventual winner won its opening match (South Africa in 1996, Egypt in 1998, Cameroon in 2002, Tunisia in 2004, Egypt in 2006, 2008 and 2010).
It was only once that the eventual champion drew in the opener, in 2000 (Cameroon 1-1 Ghana).
Since 1996, 31 quarter finalists launched their campaign with victories, 19 in draws and 14 on the losing side.
