Some major steel manufacturers in Tema are said to be folding up because of the unavailability of scrap metal which is their main raw material.
About a thousand five hundred workers are so far said to have been sent home following the closure of two of the firms.
The rest of the manufacturers meanwhile say they will follow suit once they ran out of their stock of scrap.
Their main complaint is that government has failed to enforce a ban on the export of scrap metal aimed at protecting the local industry.
Spokesperson of the steel manufacturers Michael Mortu alleged in an interview with Joy Business that the Tema port is the main point of exit for the scraps.
He said not even a meeting with the Vice President John Mahama over the matter has been of any assistance, adding, Tema steel will soon be closing down on Friday if the situation does not improve.
Meanwhile, the Trade Ministry says it is equally concerned about the situation and is promising to move in quickly.
Robert Tandoh the Deputy Chief in Charge of Industrial Programs said they will issue a directive to stop the export of the product out of the country.
