Ghanaian saxophonist Steve Bedi delivered a show-stopping performance on Saturday night at the 2025 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg, earning widespread praise as one of the standout acts of the event.
Performing on the Conga Stage at the Sandton Convention Centre, Bedi thrilled the packed audience with a mix of soulful, contemplative passages and energetic, dance-inviting grooves. Fans cheered, danced, waved and called his name throughout the set, with some describing it as the best performance of this year’s festival.
A highlight came when Bedi paid tribute to South African jazz legends with a moving rendition of “Hymn for Taiwa”, a piece he said resonates deeply with him. The hall fell into reverence before erupting into applause, with many describing the moment as transcendent and likening it to the spirit of Moses Khumalo descending upon the stage.
Social media also lit up with praise. On Instagram, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz shared behind-the-scenes clips of Bedi, calling him “Ghana’s saxophone powerhouse”. In another post ahead of the show, the festival teased: “When Steve Bedi steps onto the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz stage, expect nothing short of magic.” The comments section was flooded with admiration, including one pinned remark: “I’ve been coming to Joy of Jazz for years! Never have I experienced a performance like yours!!!!! Wherever you go, I go!!!!!”
Critics and fans alike highlighted Bedi’s ability to combine technical brilliance with personality and connection. Many suggested he should be invited back to future editions of the festival.
For audiences in Johannesburg, Bedi’s appearance went beyond a performance. It was seen as a statement of artistry and cross-continental connection, firmly placing him among the festival’s most memorable acts.
If Saturday’s set was any indication, organisers may have little choice but to make room for Steve Bedi in future editions of Joy of Jazz.
