Students of the Adu Gyamfi Senior High School at Jamase in the Ashanti region Thursday morning fled the school after vandalising school property in protest against what they say is maltreatment by some teachers.
Some of the students who spoke on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem programme revealed that one of the teachers at the school, Nii Adjetey (also known as Papa Ala) had been maltreating some of the students for some time now and in their bid to register their worry and unhappiness, they embarked on a demonstration on Tuesday which became chaotic as they vandalised some of the school's property.
The demonstration reportedly attracted heavy police presence in the school. According to sources, three students were run over by a moving car in their bid to cross a road and escape from the school. “The Police came and were pursuing us so we (all male students) fled to town,” a student stated.
One of the students (name withheld) alleged that the teacher, Nii Adjetey, is fond of maltreating the students, explaining that he usually used wooden objects to beat students for failing to go to prep.
The student continued that one time, Nii Adjetey pursued a student with a huge stick to the extent that, the student jumped from the storey building that serves as dormitory and fractured his leg as a result.
“This teacher who is a geography teacher can come to your room during prep and ask why you are still in the room; when you tell him you are sick, he will still beat you with a big stick.”
The student also alleged that, Nii Adjetey recently entered the girls’ dormitory unannounced and when some of the girls who were naked or half naked complained, he retorted “my wife has big buttocks than yours and I am not tickled in any way by seeing your nakedness”.
The students now say they want Nii Adjetey removed from the school so they can have their peace and continue with their lessons.
An opinion leader in Jamase, George Akwasi Gyempe confirmed to Adom Dwaso Nsem that some of the students who were beaten by the teacher and those who were run over by the car are on admission at the Jamase Health Centre.
He said the teacher is alleged to have absconded from the town.
Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah visited the school and reported that almost all the male students fled leaving behind only the girls.
According to him, the incidents occurred when Nii Adjetey allegedly mercilessly beat up a form three general arts student, Michael Asamoah for going to town without permission. He is also said to have manhandled the boys prefect, Thomas Baidoo who is now suffering from boils and could not attend prep.
The students during an overnight demonstration destroyed the school’s property including street lights, glasses at the dining hall, MTN call booth among others.
Ohemeng Tawaiah reported that it took police personnel from Asante Jamase and reinforcement from Asante Mampong hours to calm the situation.
Meanwhile two students, Albert Sarpong and John Teye have been arrested in connection with the riots.
