Road users of Sekondi-Takoradi have lashed out at city authorities for doing very little or nothing about the continuous deterioration of the road network in the city.Irate drivers are refusing to ply the most deteriorated routes leaving residents to walk long distances in the busy hours of the day.Although the Western Region has its share of bad roads particularly in the cocoa growing and mining areas, one would have thought that authorities would give priority to roads in the regional capital. The Port, and now Oil City-Takoradi, has some of the worst roads which have worsened over many years as if there were no authorities in the metropolis or the region. With its new status, coupled with the expansion of businesses and a growing population, residents are questioning why authorities are not expediting action on major town roads to ease the burden of motorists and commuters.Commuting within Takoradi is now becoming daunting as a result of the bad roads, and the situation is building up congestion on the few major ones. The Anaji-Ntankoful- Kansakrodo-Apolo stretch of road, Asakae, New Site, Kwesimintsim, Adentem, Effia and the New Takoradi roads are but a few of the bad roads.Drivers who use the Anaji-Ntankoful- Kansarodo road, told Maxx News, their vehicles develop faults each time they ply the area. The road, which is 8.4 kilometres, has the deepest potholes although it serves as an international route that carries traffic from neighbouring Cote D'Ivoire."In fact, the potholes are too deep that you can't even control yourself. Sometimes if you want to dodge you will meet another pothole. It's like dodge one, get three free. Everyday passengers stand here and they don't get vehicles to their destinations" a driver lamented."Every time they claim the road has been given on contract but we haven't seen anything. From Nkroful Junction to Apremdo is not far so they have to do something about it. Sometimes when you are at Kwesimintsim coming to Anaji, it is difficult for you to get a car. The drivers say the road is bad so they will never go until you get some good Samaritan driver. So we are pleading to the Government to do something about it" another driver said."I have used this roads a couple of times and it's really bad. I think that road is not fit for a city like Takoradi, a commuter lamented.Taxi drivers who ply the New Site road around the Takoradi Polytechnic area, say they may be forced to close the road to traffic if authorities do not act fast."It's been over three years now and the moment you pass there you have t go to Kokompe and buy spare parts. We have written to them over and over again but they have not been taking any action. So the only alternative they can hear is for us to close the road. When we do that they will have the senses of coming to repair the road. So we are giving them about a month and if we don't see anything there, we will close the road and we will see who will tell us to remove the blockade" he warned."Don't we have an MP or DCE in Takoradi?" An angry driver asked. "They all pass on this road but because they sit in their 4X4s so they don't care about we the taxi drivers who use the road"."And the usual response from the Assembly is that plans are afoot to award the various routes on contract."The Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Roads Engineer, William Donkoh, told Maxx News there is a project to deal with the entire road system in the City and the region at large, to ensure free movement of vehicles.
