Tema robbery attacks under control – Police

The Police in says the incessant armed robbery attacks in the vicinities are under control.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Police Command, Olivia Turkson, in response to expressions of insecurity by residents in Tema following the upsurge of crime and attacks on residents over these few weeks, told Joy News, Thursday, that investigations are being conducted into the cases.

According to her, there should be a partnership between residents and the police in curbing crime in the communities as it is a collective responsibility in bringing security to the people.

She is therefore encouraging the formation of community watch committees to help in ensuring security within the communities, adding that the police is doing a lot in ensuring security as the police have presence in the vicinities.

Residents of Tema have expressed fear following incidences of armed robbery attacks experienced in the metropolis over the past weeks.

The incidences have left victims either dead or injured, a situation that has placed the lives of residents in insecurity.

Last week Wednesday, a businessman was shot dead at Tema Community Four by unidentified men thought to be robbers. On the same day, two people, a welder and a mechanic, were attacked at gun point and robbed of their cell phones.

There are reports that there was another robbery attack in the same neighbourhood around Apple Hotel, in which one person was shot in the leg and others injured.

Meanwhile, police in Accra have expressed concern about the alarming rate at which some robbers are recruiting their family members into the trade.

Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Tetteh Yohuno, has named a notorious robber, Yaw Afoakwa or Dadesen, who perpetrated the crime with his brother.

He further mentioned another robber, Awudu, whose wife recruited people into the robbery business at the Arts Centre in Accra, a situation the police say is worrying.

Meanwhile, Yaw Afoakwa and his brother, Kofi Afoakwa, have been sentenced to 100 years each in prison by an Accra Fast Track High Court.
