Angry youth of Nkotimso near Dunkwaw-On-Offin want Chinese miners in their town to be evicted with immediate effect. They are accusing the Chinese miners of being responsible for the death of a resident of the area.
The Police had no choice than to fire tear gas Wednesday to disperse the young men who blocked the main Dunkwaw–Obuasi road in protest against the death of the young man.
In an interview with Adom News, they said, "we cannot work with the Chinese. Our lives are in danger because they have been hunting us like armed robbers. Government has to hear us and evict them.”
The Chief of Nkotimso, Nana Amoabeng Kosso said the town was in a state of fear and panic and appealed to the youth to calm down whiles the matter was resolved.
District Police Commander, Supt. Larbi however denied that there was a state of fear and panic in the town, but said the police had to move in because of the lack of respect for the law by the youth of the town.
“Calm has returned to the town as policemen have been deployed to various strategic points including the chief's palace,” he stated.
He said the incident started after the death of a young man whose corpse was discovered in a nearby stream.
However, instead of waiting for the autopsy report by doctors, the youth took the law into their own hands; took the corpse and dumped it on the compound of some Chinese miners.
They blocked the main road to prevent any vehicle from moving.
