The Tesano Dolphins, the swim team of Tesano Sports Club, outdoored 20 medals and a trophy it won in the 41 International Schwimmfest held in Arnsberg; Germany from 25 to 27 May 2012.
The swimming competition which is organized annually by SV Neptun of Arnsberg – Neheim, is rated among the top 10 competitions for swimming Clubs worldwide.
The ceremony was held at the premises of Tesano Sports Club, Accra.
At the ceremony were the Deputy Chief Sports Development Officer of the Ghana Sports Authority, Mr Ohene Karikari; the President of Ghana Swimming Association, Theophilus Wilson Edzei, the Chairman of Tesano Sports Club Council John Attafuah, Trustees and Council Executives of the sports club and executives of the Ghana Swimming Association.
Mr. Abbiw Jackson, the Team Manger of the Tesano Dolphins, in presenting his report stated that this was the second time the Tesano Dolphins have participated in the competition.
In 2011, the team bagged 16 medals.
He stated that 45 Clubs (43 of which were from Europe) participated in the competition presenting a total 761 swimmers aged 9 and above. The Ghanaian contingent had 14 swimmers (10 girls 4 boys) with the oldest being 14 years.
The team emerged 15th with 7 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze. He expressed appreciation to IPMC, Metso Minerals and Phase II Visuals for providing various sponsorships to the team.
The highlight of the ceremony was when 7 Gold Medalist, Abeiku Jackson (aged 12), was introduced to the dignitaries – who gave him a standing ovation for his exploits. The young boy bagged 8 medals, 7 Gold and 1 silver, plus a trophy for being the best male swimmer born in 2000.
Abeiku Jackson expressed his appreciation to all those who had contributed in diverse ways to the team’s success.
“Our performance in Germany is only a stepping stone towards our real objective. We have set our eyes on qualifying for the Olympics. This will be achieved sooner than later.” said the young talented swimmer brimming with confidence.
He appealed to corporate Ghana for sponsorship to undertake the various activities (equipment, appropriate diet, competitions etc) needed to prepare the talented swimmers towards their goal.
A representative of Unilever Ghana Ltd pledged to provide sponsorship to the team stating that Blue Band will be glad to be associated with the Dolphins and swimming.
Mr Ohene Karikari, Mr Theophilus Edzie, and Mr John Attafua took turns in commending the team.
They encouraged the Tesano Dolphins to strive for higher glory, keep their discipline and expect support from the various institutions they head.
The team entertained all to a 50m freestyle relay event between Kow, Ryan Kwesi Abbiw and Abeiku representing the boys and Ewuraa Quarshie, Eyram Shabashie, Selinam Shabashie and Delphine Shooter representing the girls.
