Six months after the commissioning of the Teshie-Nungua desalination plant, residents are still complaining about high levels of salt in the drinking water.
The desalination plant, the first of its kind in Africa, is expected to treat sea water for drinking.
The company working on the project, BEFESA Desalination Development Ghana, has been discharging the treated water through taps in the area, however, it has been difficult for residents to drink the water.
Joy News’ Kwetey Nartey who visited community reports that residents still have concerns about the water they get from the over 150 million dollars project.
The many of the over 500,000 residents that the water project feeds say although they use the water, they are doing so out of necessity.
"Now we are not able to drink, we do use it to cook and bath," a resident told Kwetey. Residents say they still buy sachet water for drinking.
Residents have lauded the project, but say the salt content in the drinking water must be reduced significantly to make drinking possible.
