The Director of the CSIR Water Research Institute, Mike Osei-Atweneboana has indicated that the quality of Ghana’s water resources has deteriorated due to the introduction of chemicals into most water bodies.
According to him, the institute came to this realization after monitoring and collecting data on the practices being employed in most mining areas in the country.
The Water Research Institute is a subsidiary of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and is responsible for conducting research on all sources of water in the country and providing the necessary recommendations to ensuring that all water resources are of high quality.
Speaking in an interview with Joy Business, the Director of the CSIR Water Research Institute, Mr. Osei-Atweneboana said, through evaluation and monitoring, it was detected that the quality of the country’s water resources deteriorated further even though government placed a ban on illegal mining in the country.
“With the onset of the galamsey, from our data and monitoring, we realized that, the quality of the water was becoming very poor because of other chemicals that are being introduced into the water because of the things that are used for the extraction of the gold”, he said.
He added that the institute is partnering with other companies that have access to some unique water treatment systems to treat the water and make it safe for use.
He advised government to invest purposely into the treatment of polluted water in the country to prevent incidences of Water shortage in the country.
