The decision of whether Ghana or African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries should sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) by its adversaries can be levied to the incident which happened in the Bible.
Most of you might have read it or not, but nevertheless, let me drop that scripture here and see how maybe if most of whom as are considered to be the dignitaries to the future of Africa or Ghana, might get a deep reflection on it and thereby consider whether signing it or not.
GENESIS 3:1-4, 1 now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman.”
In my sense of sovereignty and the ability to choose, considering the risks and benefits likely to gain, I will choose to reflect on this scripture before making any immediate choices that might affect or damage the hope the people around me.
Unlike the EPA which many consider to be “a danger on the hope of Africa”, it has no difference if it is looked from such angle.
EPA SCRIPTURE
EPA CHAPTER 3:1-4
EPA 3:1-4, now the EU was craftier than any international body the world has ever encountered. They said to Africa, “Did Nigeria really say, “ECOWAS will make a mistake if it signs the Economic Partnership agreement?”
2 Then Ghana said to EU, “We can reconsider the decision and make it reflect more on improving the contribution of Africa to the world than putting Africa in a corner where it sells it power to EU.
3 But Nigeria did say, “ECOWAS must not sign the Economic Partnership Agreement without in-depth analysis and restructuring, and neither must it, even think of touching it or all African Countries will be in total darkness and economic declination.”
4 “You will surely suffer if you do not sign this Agreement,” European Union said to Ghana.
So, the question I am asking is: Does it mean the EU is threatening us if we do not sign the Agreement? And who is the loser if Africa’s relationship with the EU goes sour? Is it Africa or the European Union, which is struggling with America and China over Africa?
