A law lecturer and human rights advocate, Ernest Kofi Abotsie has called for criminal action to be taken against personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces found culpable of assaulting civilians. He is outraged over what he says is the “military thuggery” which is gradually creeping into the country. His call comes just a day after personnel from the Ghana Navy reportedly subjected a trader at the Arts Centre in Accra to severe beating. The trader, Ali Sule groaned in pain as he recounted his predicament to officers at the Ridge Hospital in the presence of a Joy FM reporter on Friday. He said he was picked up by the Navy personnel on Thursday after a fight with a colleague trader, was battered, and locked up night long and released Friday. Head of Communications at the Ghana Armed Forces Col Nibo regretted the incident, saying his outfit has commenced investigations into the matter. But the law lecturer says “the criminal machinery of the state should be activated” against these military personnel. He feels most military investigations have failed to impose adequate punitive measures. “Past military misbehavior has not been punished,” he said, adding that has emboldened others to engage in gross misconduct. He says the incessant reports of military brutality are a reflection of the evolution of the military as well as their socialization process.
