To mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) on May 17, 2016, Tigo together with its Digital Change leaders, Marie Godwyll of Young @ Heart and Hayford Siaw of E-Library on Wheels visited two Shelter 4 Education schools to empower and introduce pupils to digital technology. 

Taking place at Tupaa and Adeiso Basic Schools in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions respectively, a team of volunteers led pupils to learn about and experience computers, websites, e-learning and mobile computing.

As part of activities, pupils were coached on the essentials of good presentation skills, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving. They were also equipped with practical knowledge of the ICT subject studied in class, and tasked to create logos for imaginary charity organizations using the skills they had acquired.

“We are privileged to have this session for our pupils and believe it will provide a firm foundation for these kids to build the interest in information technology”, said Mr. Albert Amable,  Headmaster of Obeng Yaw Basic School in the Eastern region.

Gifty Bingley, Director for Corporate Affairs said: “It’s thrilling to know that what we have done here today will be a life-changing moment for many of these students. We not only gave them hands-on experience with digital devices but also demonstrated how technology can be used to address environmental and social issues.”

The Headmaster of Tupaa basic school, Osman K. Eshun, commended Tigo for the initiative and encouraged pupils to apply the knowledge they had learned for future reference.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated annually by the United Nations (UN) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to help raise awareness for the various ways in which the internet and ICT can open up opportunities for societies and economies as well as bridge the digital divide.

This year, it was held under the theme: "ICT entrepreneurship for social impact”.

Tupaa and Obeng Yaw basic schools are beneficiaries of Tigo’s flagship CSR project, Shelter 4  Education which built six schools for six deprived communities across Ghana.
