For the third year in a row, Telecom Brand of the Year, Tigo has contributed towards the Ghana Journalists Association Awards which comes off of on August 27, at the Banquet Hall, State House.
At a short ceremony at the International Press Centre in Accra, the Director for Corporate Affairs for Tigo, Gifty Bingley, presented a cheque for GH¢10,000. This will go towards the Digital Journalism category of the awards.
She said the role and contributions of journalists in national development cannot be over-emphasised and urged the Association to continue to hold its members to higher professional and ethical standards, balanced and fair news reporting.
Touching on the Digital Journalism category, Mrs Bingley said the high penetration of mobile phones and digital technology had also created access to tons of information sharing including news reports and encouraged particularly online journalists, to employ the same principles as the traditional media in sharing verified and accurate information.
“The fast pace of the online media is incredible. They offer real-time information. News articles go viral every day and are shared and read by thousands of people across borders and continents. It is important not to sacrifice speed for accuracy and decency for sensationalism in the quest to be the first to break the news,” she emphasised.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Association, the President of GJA, Affail Monney thanked Tigo for its consistent and continuous support in helping to celebrate responsible journalism.
“On behalf of the executives, we would like to thank Tigo for standing with us these past three years, we look forward to your continued support. It is refreshing to know that you appreciate the contributions of the media and celebrate our quest for higher professional and ethical standards,” he said.
The 21st GJA Awards will honour some 30 outstanding journalists in Ghana.
