Ghana's Black Queens put on a commendable performance at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The team narrowly lost to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals via a 4-2 penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time on July 22, 2025, at the Olympic Stadium Rabat.

Despite missing out on a place in the final, which would have been the first time since 2006, the Black Queens’ campaign has won the hearts of many Ghanaians.

Semi-final heartbreak

The Black Queens lost 4-2 on penalties to Morocco after Stella Nyamekye scored for Ghana and Sakina Ouzraoui equalized for the hosts, with Morocco eventually winning on penalties.

Bronze for Black Queens

The team’s victory against South Africa secured a bronze medal for third place in the tournament.

Praise from Ghanaians

The Black Queens’ performance has garnered widespread acclaim from football fans, politicians, and Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who lauded their “courageous” display against Morocco.

Impact and future prospects

The team’s spirited performance has shifted perceptions, with many Ghanaians now calling for equal investment in women’s football.

The Black Queens clinched the bronze medal and a $350,000 prize after defeating South Africa in the third-place playoff.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren received praise for his role in improving the team’s cohesion and performance throughout the tournament.
