Today is #NoCallsDay

The campaign dubbed, #NoCallsDay to protest the ongoing SIM Card re-registration exercise takes place today, February 8.

From 6:00am to 12noon on Tuesday, over 7,000 mobile network subscribers will not make phone calls.

The campaign is being spearheaded by a group of notable Ghanaian personalities who identify themselves as Concerned Mobile Network Subscribers.

The group comprises Members of Parliament, members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), media practitioners, and private legal practitioners.

They are former MP for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, Legal Practitioner Samson Lardy Anyenini, Investigative Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, Founding President and Senior Vice-President of IMANI-Africa, Franklin Cudjoe and Kofi Bentil respectively.

The others are; Prof. Raymond Atuguba, Mr. Kofi Kakraba Pratt, Dr. Kwesi Owusu, Mr. James Afedo, Mr. Selorm Branttie, Mr. Francis, Kofi Korankye-Sakyi, Akyaaba Addai – Sebo, Mr. Kwame Mfodwo, and Mr. Michael Ofori-Akuffo.

The Concerned Mobile Network Subscribers is demanding that the National Communications Authority (NCA) immediately withdraws its directive for mobile network customers to re-register their SIM Cards by March 31, 2022.

Also, the group wants an appropriate legal framework to be put in place for any directives for SIM re-registration to happen.

They want the NCA and MNOs to come up with a better and innovative way of re-registering the SIM Cards without the current chaotic and inhumane re-registration process we are witnessing up and down the country.

"The NCA should direct the MNOs to stop using private phones of employees to collect subscribers’ biometric data," the group added.

The group's concerns follow long queues that have characterised the re-registration exercise at various centres since the beginning of the year.

Many have called on government to extend the deadline as well as come up with alternatives that will not have citizens spend several hours in queues.

Reactions on social media indicate that support for the initiative is growing gradually.
